6 Easy Summer Beauty Updates
- Written By:Alexandra Perron, Managing Editor
Summer can be brutal on your skin. It’s hot and humid outside and a polar vortex of AC inside. Some days it feels like your face is melting (even more so when you’re wearing a mask) and on others it’s just the opposite. So, how to deal? It’s all about making some strategic product swaps and a few tweaks to your beauty routine. Here are some of my go-tos.
Change Your Moisturizer
As temps rise, the last thing you want on your face are products that feel heavy. Those thick, souffle-like creams you slather on all winter long? Move them to the back of the shelf for the next few months. Switching to a lighter moisturizer will keep your skin hydrated without weighing you down. The Light Moisture Cream from Jones Road is a gel-moisturizer hybrid with niacinamide, macadamia seed oil, and shea butter that feels just right for the summer months. If you’re someone with extra dry skin, keep your thick moisturizer on hand as a night cream.
Edit Your SPF
You need to wear SPF everyday. No exceptions. Look for a multitasking sunscreen, like a tinted moisturizer or primer with SPF and knock two birds with one stone. Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen has been my go-to since it first launched. It’s lightweight, packed with antioxidants, and goes on with a velvety smooth finish—goodbye pores! It like using it as a primer and my husband wears it on its own. When it comes to reapplying, convenience is key. I’m a big fan of stick and powder sunscreens (I keep Supergoop Glow Stick and (Re)Setting Powder on hand) for this purpose.
Speaking of multitasking, your SPF doesn’t need to be the only product pulling double duty. Cut down on steps in your routine with a one-and-done product like Jones Road Miracle Balm. With sheer color (try Tawny or Bronze) and just the right amount of dewiness, this product can take the place of your highlighter, blush, bronzer, and lip gloss.
Swap Your Lipstick
Maybe it’s just me, but putting on a matte lipstick in the summer is the last thing I feel like doing. I gravitate towards tinted balms, stains, and glosses. No mess, no fuss, and easy to reapply without a mirror.
Invest in Your Mascara
The last thing anyone wants is mascara running down their face while waiting for the train, running between appointments, or out for lunch on a super hot day. The Mascara from Jones Road is smudge-proof and volumizing. A total win-win in my book.
Whether you’ve had a long day in the sun or spent hours being blasted by the AC, your skin deserves some TLC this summer. I’m a fan of the weekly (or twice weekly) face mask to bring my skin back to life. Need a hydration boost after a day in the sun? Glossier’s Moisturizing Moon Mask is packed with hyaluronic acid and aloe. Breaking out after a sweaty day? I like this detoxifying mask from Lesse. Skin feeling dull? Tata Harper’s Resurfacing Mask is my go-to all year long.
