Hands down, summer is one of our favorite times to eat oysters. There’s just something about the season that spikes our craving. Plus, the tasty bivalves are low in calories (around 68 for a 3.5 ounce wild oyster), while being high in protein and other key nutrients. You’ll get over 100% RDI of zinc, copper, vitamin B12 and a good amount of omega-3 fatty acids, which are linked to improved heart and brain health. What’s not to love about that?
When it comes to oyster season, keep in mind that oysters spawn in the summer, when the water is warm, and this influences flavor and composition. Oysters are typically best when enjoyed out of cold water. And try to take it easy on the toppings and enjoy your first oyster “naked" and go from there.
