My First Vogue Cover with Naomi Campbell
My first Vogue cover was with the gorgeous Naomi Campbell and shot by Patrick Demarchelier in East Hampton in 1989. It was Naomi’s first Vogue cover as well.
The shoot was really early in the morning and it was the first time anyone had filled in Naomi’s lips with a dark color. Her signature look was a dark outline around her lips, with the inside being a light lip color. I wasn’t trying to be a rebel, but I thought making her entire lips darker looked better.
There were no mirrors on set, so she didn't ask me to change it! When the cover came out I heard she wasn't really happy with how it looked but this has never been confirmed. All these years later, I still love the way it looks.
